Notice to practitioners re Defendants’ Costs Orders
Amendment to Costs in Criminal Cases (General) Regulations 1986; Statutory Instrument 2008 No. 2448
From 13 October 2008 practitioners must send all new claims directly to the relevant office of the National Taxing Team (regardless of the date of the costs order). This will be determined by which NTT office covers those Crown Courts to which a Magistrates Court commits its’ cases (see Annex A attached).
You must include your file(s) with your claim and must endorse either the Libra reference number or the unique Magistrates’ Court reference number on the claim. The order for costs made by the Court must also be attached to give the NTT authority to determine the claim.

Applications are invited for the following Prizes which are awarded by
the Society each year.
Newcastle Prize
This Prize has been in existence since 1922 and is awarded to the candidate who having gained a distinction and the highest overall mark on any LPC, has after 1st July 2007 but before the 30th June 2008 entered into a training contract with a firm of solicitors practising in the area of the Newcastle upon Tyne Law Society. Our area stretches from Berwick in the North, to Durham City in the South and West as far as Haltwhistle. It does not include Sunderland. The Prize is always awarded one year in arrears so as not to prejudice a candidate who has opted to take time out. It follows therefore that we are looking for candidates who have passed their LPC in Summer 2007 or earlier. They should have started their training contract between 1st July 2007 and 30th June 2008.

The Prize this year is £200.
University of Northumbria – Exempting Degree Prize
This is awarded to the best student (with first class honours) on the above degree course, who subsequently goes on to obtaining a training contract in the Society’s area. As it is also awarded one year in arrears we are looking at candidates who passed their final examination and left University in Summer 2007. Those interested in applying should please send their details to the address given above by Friday 24th October 2008.
We require confirmation of your marks from years 2, 3 and 4 of the course.
The Prize is also £200

The family believe that Dr Turnbull made a Will with a local solicitor in Newcastle and/or Gosforth within the past 10 years.
